Speeding ticket and the risk of license suspension
Speeding tickets cost a lot in California. If you speed 1 to 15 miles per hour over the speed limit the average speeding ticket would cost you about $146. But if you speed 16 to 25 miles per hour over the speed limit the fine goes up to $266. That is just the amount the ticket alone will cost you. If you decide to fight your ticket, court costs will be added to this amount.
If you plead guilty and pay your fine or if you decide to fight your ticket and in the end become convicted, points will be added to your DMV record and will remain on it for at least 3 years. You may be eligible to go to traffic school to eliminate these points, but that will cost you as well. You can only attend traffic school every 18 months. If you can't go to traffic school and these points remain on your record, once your insurance company finds out about them and your speeding ticket, your insurance premium will rise and cost you a lot over the next 3 years. These points can even cost you your driver's license if you have previous points and together they add up to 4 points in 12 months, 6 points in 24 months or 8 points in 36 months. A suspended driver's license will put you in a lot of trouble and cost you even more.
Speeding over 100 miles per hour in California is considered a reckless speed and high speed violations along with minor citations can become reckless driving offenses. Reckless driving is a misdemeanor in California and you can be taken into custody immediately. Your driver's license will be suspended for at least one month and you have to pay heavy fines somewhere between $500 and $5000. Some insurance companies would cancel your policy if you have a reckless driving offense on your record and deny insuring you anymore, or do so at a much higher rate than before. For further offenses the license suspension will be longer.
