The California Point System

To understand how traffic citations can effect your driving record you should understand the California point system.

Each time you plead guilty or are found guilty on a moving violation, you receive either a single point or two points on your dmv driving record. Two points are charged against you if you are convicted of drunk driving, reckless driving, hit-and-run driving or driving while your license is suspended.

The Department Of Motor Vehicles may suspend your license for up to 6 months if you receive four points in one year, six points in two years, or eight points over a three year period.

Insurance:

Pleading guilty or being found guilty of a moving violation may mean that your insurance company will raise your premiums, and sometimes even cancel your insurance. With this in mind it is important to consider fighting your traffic ticket instead of simply paying it off. It may cost a bit more up front but can save you a great deal over the long run.
