DMV Point Reduction in California

DMV Point Reduction in CaliforniaDMV uses a point system to track the record of each driver. Every driver starts with a clean record and each traffic violation adds some points to this record. Getting a ticket and having an at fault accident are some of the traffic violations that add one point to the DMV record. Hit and run, reckless driving, driving without a driver's license and DUI/DWI are some of the violations that add 2 points. Fortunately, there is a system, DMV point reduction in California.

Having too many points in a certain amount of time will result in suspension of your driver's license. Regardless of the class of your driver's license, 4 points in 12 months, 6 points in 24 months and 8 points in 36 months will suspend your driver's license. DMV will send you notes when a point is added to your record, when you have reached half the limit and when you are only one point away from losing your driver's license. You will be put on probation for one year and your license will be suspended for at least six months. If during this time you are involved in a collision, regardless of who is at fault, or if any other violation occurs, the probation will be extended for one more year and the license will be suspended for an additional six months.

These points will stay on your record for at least three years, sometimes even longer. One point additions and some of the two points will be erased after 36 months. However, a FTA will stay on your record for five years. If this FTA was issued for failure to appear in court for a DUI offense, the points will remain on your record for ten years.

Going to traffic school is a DMV point reduction system to clear your record. Unfortunately, it only works for one point violations. For two point violations, traffic school would not have any effect and there is no other DMV point reduction system.

If your driver's license is suspended, you can request a DMV hearing to fight for your driving privileges. You might get your license back or get a restricted license. You have the right to have an attorney representing you at the DMV hearing. Call (866) 780-1234 to talk to a traffic lawyer and get help with your DMV hearing.
